The match watcher's pick
Trophy Manager
Trophy Manager makes a clear promise. You run an internet football club in a universe where every other club is controlled by a person, and your team plays to a fixed timetable whether you are watching or not.
What it is
The official site sums the job up as controlling finances, setting tactics for matches and buying players. You choose the country you want your team to play in and get a team straight away, with no approval step. From there you compete for a national league title, a cup and international club tournaments. If the national team dugout appeals, there are elections for national coach every two seasons.
The game is developed by Trophy Games A/S, and the site footer credits the wider Trophy Manager community alongside it. That community angle matters: the front page promises that you will only ever face other players, and that only your managerial skills decide the outcome.
How a season feels
The schedule is fixed and your team plays league matches three times per week. Around those fixtures you receive training reports from your players, and you can design custom training programmes so that each one develops in the direction you want. The site frames a squad-building choice early on: build around young players, or bring in older and more experienced ones.
The match simulator is the developer's headline feature. Trophy Manager calls it the most advanced and realistic among the large internet manager games. We cannot measure a claim like that from the outside, so here is simply what you get: you can follow a match live, 90 minutes plus added time, or log in later for a replay or the written match report.
Injuries and suspensions come with the territory, which makes squad depth a real concern rather than a nice-to-have. The transfer list is where you go for cover, and where the site suggests you might find a youngster who grows into a star.
Time it asks of you
Three league matches a week mean more frequent decisions than a weekly game. Because matches run on a fixed clock and you can watch replays, you never need to be online at kick-off. A workable routine is a short visit before each matchday to check the line-up and tactics, plus a longer weekly look at the training reports and the transfer list.
If you go away for a few days, the matches still happen. Leave a squad and tactic that can cope without you before you pack.
How it pays its way
The site says plainly that the game is free to play and free to sign up, and that all you need is a browser. No download is required. There is no phone app advertised on the official front page.
The terms of service mention an optional paid product called TM PRO and state that TM PRO purchases cannot be refunded, whatever the reason. The public front page does not describe what TM PRO includes, so we will not guess. Look at the in-game description before paying, and remember the no-refund rule.
